Weiner-Dog (2016)

Todd Solondz can be a bit hit or miss for me but this is certainly one of his lighter works. Made up of four stories all involving the dog, the opener is the easiest and perhaps best told. As we move forward it steps into darker territory, not as dark as the director has gone before but apparently there were many walkouts at the sundance showing (beware dog lovers the end is harsh). Excellent performances from all the recognisable faces, Greta Gerwig makes you want to be her friend, Danny Devito makes you laugh as does Ellen Burstyn who plays the old lady i want to be. A quirky offbeat comedy with well thought out timely characters.

Like This Watch These: Welcome to the Dollhouse (1995) Solondz's depressing school based black comedy, Serial Mom (1994) Hilarious, Storytelling (2001) More dysfunctional folks from Solondz.
