The Magnificent Seven (2016)

Not being a fan of remakes i gave this a go as it has good actors and an interesting director and it was fine, ultimately pointless but ok. The gathering of the seven takes up more of the film and builds to the end battle which is quite exciting. I would have much prefered it if they had written an original western with Denzel (who is terrific) as the lead, as opposed to rehashing a great film and certainly not improving it. The Magnificent Seven (1960) is a remake itself of the Japanese Seven Samurai (1954) but it made a huge change from 16th century Samurai to Western Cowboys and that's why it is successful, it kept the essence of the story but made a different film. Sadly this is the same film directed differently.

Like This Watch These: The Magnificent Seven (1960) Not even Chris Pratt can outcool Steve McQueen, Seven Samurai (1954) (Subs)If you can handle 3 and a half hours of Japanese swordplay it's beautiful, Bone Tomahawk (2015) A superb modern western.
