River (2015)

Largely unknown but well worth your time, starring Donald Sutherland's other son (Rossif) this quiet thriller moves along with confidence and ease. A volunteer doctor's life nearly unravels after intervening in the assault of a young woman, this would be hero gets accused of murder. You really feel like a stranger in a foreign place when watching this, so immersive is the camerawork and cinematography, the fear of language barriers and different laws and punishment is palpable. The ending is contentious but even if you don't like it, it takes nothing from the rest of this well acted, deftly written and eye-catchingly directed non mainstream chiller.

Like This Watch These: The Beach (2000) Leo searching for paradise, The African Queen (1951) Love on an African river during the war, Castaway (1986) Not the Tom Hanks one.
