American Honey (2016)

Sweet, spiritual and beautifully shot Andrea Arnold's latest gives us a new taste of her artistry, like Fish Tank(2009) but more hopeful and aesthetic, maybe because its set on vast American highways and not an Essex estate. Sexy, charming and a little annoying Shia LaBeouf is the perfect fit for the first love of protagonist Star, she falls deep and hard but she shows utter fearlessness and faith throughout the film so you feel she will always be ok. Full of intense love scenes and crazed youth listening to an apt soundtrack you do not feel the lengthy running time just like you are along for the ride. The visuals have a real optimism and the sunlight is used to remind you to look up and soak up the beauty that surrounds us no matter what shit goes on below.

Like This Watch These: Spring Breakers (2012) More crazed Teens, Fish Tank (2009) Andrea Arnold's first bleaker coming of age film, Kids (1995) Early 90's teens show how it was in New York.
