Midnight Special (2016)
Michael Shannon gives yet another intense, powerful performance in this understated and elegant sci-fi adventure, supported wonderfully by the entire cast who emote like they mean it. Jeff Nichols directs magically as usual, using very attractive scenery of mundane everyday landscapes balances well with the heavenly use of light and the more scientific elements introduced steadily during the film. Reminiscent of some 80's SF classics this has a fresh but nostalgic feel, it's emotional and lovely.
Like This Watch These: Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977) People drawn to a terrestrial event, Take Shelter (2011) Another Shannon/Nichols team up, Starman (1984) Government tries to intervene in someone going home, again.
