MUST WATCH For all music and film fans this marries the two perfectly and stylishly, occasionally over choreographed sequences still look very good and are fleeting. The cast is very strong, newcomer Ansel Elgort does well amongst the big hitters and seems charming during the romantic bits, their relationship is what dreams are made of, i always like Kevin Spacey on the wrong side of good and everyone else does their bit to make this feel like a collaborative effort. Not as funny as some of Edgar Wright's previous films, but the funny bits are laugh out loud you just wish there were more. A film fans dream as so many films are referenced, aped and it hums with the influence of cinema and music from a lifetime. The music is an eclectic mix of joy, this director knows his tunes and uses them for optimum impact, it has changed the way i will now listen to certain ones. It gives off a great feeling of inclusiveness, by this i mean nothing feels derided even the methods used for listening to music-it has tapes, phones, ipods and radio and nothing is looked down upon. Edgar Wright puts his passion out there for all to see and again it is wondrous.
Like This Watch These: Scott Pilgrim vs The World (2010) Pure entertainment with class, funny with impressive action and a wistful feeling, The Blues Brothers (1980) The only other film i can think of where the music and movement match so well, Hot Fuzz (2007) This is the (w)right level of hilarious, endlessly quotable funnies.
