The Day The Earth Caught Fire (1961)

MUST WATCH This Dystopian vision of a world brought to collapse by our own human scientists going overboard with nuclear tests tells a convincing and unnerving tale without depressing the viewer. I do have a particular penchant for apocalyptic visions but this handles the bleak subject matter well, phenomenal visuals switching from black & white to gorgeous impending hues of red and yellow are really affecting. The 60's movie archetypal characters are needed and seem relatively modern, there is a love story, family issues and many obstacles thrown in none of which are handled with clumsy hollywood hands. Directed with flair and intelligence, performed with heart and realism what is not to love in this sphere of doom.

Like This Watch These: The Day The Earth Stood Still (1951) Another early warning to ignore, Mad Max (1979) Lets not let it get to this Children Of Men (2006) No children, no future.
