Gangster No.1 (2000)
Even with my personal immunity to movie violence i can say there are some shocking, ferocious and bloody scenes that zing with madness, performed thrillingly by a young Paul Bettany in this rise and fall story of London gangsters. A sharp script aids the slick direction during the detailed building of character and theme, enveloping you in the down and dirty 60's underworld and rocketing you through resulting decades. The use of Malcolm McDowell is unsurprising (you would use him if you could get him) but unnecessary as all others actors play themselves older, this is my only problem with this film and it's a small one. Not for the faint hearted more the strong stomached.
Like This Watch These: The Krays (1990) London real life thug life , The Long Good Friday (1980) English gangster probs Brighton Rock (1947) Richard Attenborough subtly chilling (not relaxing - scary).
