If you genuinely like proper classic musicals you might not love this as much as everyone in the world seems to, i really didn't from the cringe worthy opening sequence to the unhopeful ending i did not fall under the La La spell. There are some lovely and well performed scenes, Gosling is dreamy and Stone charming/annoying it is very unrealistic and not in that 'days of old' movie musical manner. Loving musicals as i do i tried to like this but i can't it doesn't work for me if you're doing vintage musical go all out do not half arse around with ultra modern settings, poor characters seemingly living in luxury and an ungrateful female lead.
Better Than This: The Blues Brothers (1980) How modern musicals should be, Crazy, Stupid Love (2011) A more loving Gosling/Stone pair up, Singin' in the rain (1952) An actual joy filled musical.
